How to Respond to a 1-Star Google Review With No Text
A rating with no words gives you nothing to work with, which is exactly why a short reply matters. In our analysis of 14,737 Google reviews across 40 local businesses, 76% of reviews are 5-star, so a silent 1-star stands out to readers more than it should. Two calm sentences show them you noticed and tried.
Answering a rating that came with no words
- Keep it to one or two sentences. With no details to address, a long reply reads as protesting too much.
- Never guess at what went wrong. Naming a problem they did not mention plants it in the next reader's head.
- Invite the story: ask them to share what happened through a direct channel.
- If you have no record of the person, it is fine to say so politely (see the fake-review templates for that case).
Thank you for the rating, [Name]. We would genuinely like to know what went wrong, so if you are open to it, please reach us at [email]. We read and act on everything.
Hi [Name], sorry to see we fell short for you. If you can spare two minutes, I would love to hear what happened: [phone]. It helps us more than you know.
[Name], thanks for letting us know something was off, even without the details. If you want to tell us more, we are at [email] and we will listen.
Swap the bracketed placeholders ([Name], [email], [phone]) for real details before posting. The more specific the reply, the more genuine it reads.

Should I even respond to a rating with no review text?
Yes, briefly. The silent 1-star is read by the same prospects as a written one, and an unanswered rating leaves them free to imagine the worst. A two-sentence invitation to talk shows attentiveness at almost zero cost.
Can I get a text-less 1-star rating removed?
Only if it violates policy some other way (spam, a competitor, someone who was never a customer). Having no text is not itself a violation, so removal odds are low. Flag it if you suspect it is not genuine, and reply politely either way.
What if I have no idea who the reviewer is?
Say so, politely: you have no record of the name and would like to make it right if they were a customer. If you are confident the rating is misplaced or fake, flag it and use the fake-review approach instead.
